When
we ponder family values and what it means to us as Westerners, oftentimes we don't
consider other cultures, many of which are hundreds of years older than ours. This
image of Telipit Ole Saitoti, Harvard-educated Ph.D., author, and international lecturer,
and his sister at his village in Tanzania, Africa speaks volumes about love, sibling
affection, and national pride. We assume that once one escapes to America, he/she
would hesitate to return. Saitoti not only returned but also became an elder to his
village, the husband to five wives, and the father of dozens of children. The love,
adoration, and respect for his family and theirs for him transcend our native-born
sensibilities and embrace a natural law: Love conquers all.
