On the last day of our safari in the Tarangarie National Forest, we happened across four
lionesses crossing the road heading directly toward our Land Rover. Our driver-guide
hit the brakes. As we fumbled for our camera gear, four lions turned 4 meters in
front of us and sauntered slowly into "the bush" as if they had never been in
the road.
As I raised my medium telephoto lens to eye level, one turned to face us. I squeezed
off one frame, and she was gone. It gave us all pause because of the numerous times
we jumped out of the Land Rover for brief periods, assured that we were alone. We
recognized that when it comes to the wild, that is East Africa, we never were alone.
